In many rich countries there are statistical records going back several generations, allowing us to estimate marriage rates by age and year of birth. The chart here uses those records to give marriage rates by age and year of birth for five cohorts of men in England and Wales. For the US we have data on marriage rates going back to the start of the 20th century. This lets us see when the decline started, and trace the influence of social and economic changes during the process. There are a lot of factors as to why I enjoy this drama so much. I would say most of them are subtle reasons that cater to my personality.

Marriage Not Dating Episode 15

Before she can announce her decision, Dad comes running in to excitedly tell them he’s been promoted to university president. I love how all three of the women’s faces are like, So what, jerkface. When he asks for congratulations, Mom says he ought to congratulate her, so he starts in with the lip service of how he owes it all to her.

But there’s still a lot of cross-country variation around this general trend, and in some countries changes are going in the opposite direction. In China, Russia and Bangladesh, for example, marriages are more common today than a couple of decades ago. So far, this is one of the few dramas I’ve watched that managed to draw me in from the start to the end. Usually, I get bored half way through and find myself FF all the annoying and useless bits.

Marriages and Divorces

We don’t know yet how long the marriages of younger couples today will last. It will take several decades before we have the full picture on more recent marriages and their eventual outcomes. More than half of the countries that allow same-sex marriage are in Western Europe.

Our Blooming Youth ( Episode 11

If anyone is interested, you can watch Strong Heart Episodes 5 and 6 on DramaFever. Comgratulations to Yeon Woo Jin and Han Groo! It’s my first time seeing Han Groo act and I’m even surprised because she’s so young! Her acting is on point and she’s so good at comedy. Yeon Woo Jin’s characters are so scary and he was a killer in Arang but the first time I saw him was in Ojakgyo Brothers and from then on, I knew he’d do well in a rom com.

Mom says that sounds terrible, but Jang-mi says as long as Mom is against Ki-tae, she’s stuck with her, which makes Mom smile a little. Jang-mi wants to know what was in her dad’s postcards to make Ki-tae so sure (he previously told her it was the sweetest love letter he ever read, hee) and grabs them from him. He reclaims them and they adorably tickle-hug-wrestle for possession of the envelope. A passing fisherman picks up the envelope when Ki-tae drops it, and says he knows the man who wrote it, and that he was heading to Seoul today to close his chicken restaurant. Geum Sae Rok and Steven Noh (Noh Sang Hyun) are in discussion to be the main lead of the upcoming K-drama Soundtrack No.2.

While in reply1997 we have the ever supportive group of friends. TvN seems to really like wedding scenes in their dramas this year. I just realized that Han Groo, Sun Hwa and So Hee are all in their very early 20’s. I was surprised to find out that there was an 8 year age gap between HG and YWJ. He needs to loosen up and act more natural. There is nothing more intimidating than a flock of meddling ahjummas.

Soaked and deserted by family and friends, Ki-tae and Jang-mi just look at each other and begin to laugh. Jang-mi giggles at how “them” the wedding is, and Ki-tae agrees. They exchange wedding rings in the pouring rain, as Jang-mi thinks how marriage involves not just them, but both of their families. There will be lots of family issues, but marriage is worth it to be together. Absolved of guilt, Ki-tae asks what Jang-mi is hiding, and she tells him she only paid Yeo-reum for his part of the bar since he’s leaving. The busybody Gong ladies, who have been complaining about everything, now take offense that the family’s only heir is marrying a bar owner.

Marriage Not Dating Episode 12

More people marrying later means that a greater share of young people being unmarried. The age at which women marry is increasing in many countries in all regions, from Norway to Japan to Chile. English men in more recent cohorts are much less likely to have married, and that’s true at all ages. The proportion of people who are getting married is going down in many countries across the world. I should check out that taiwanese drama then. I have had loads of fun and laughter watching this and didn’t want it to end.

Marriage Not Dating wraps up in a satisfying and poetic way, bringing us back full circle to remind us why we’ve all loved this couple so much. They stay true to themselves as the show manages to tie up all the loose ends nicely, leaving me feeling like everyone gets the ending they deserve. It’s definitely made its mark as a memorable and wonderfully fun drama, and I know I’ll miss Ki-tae and Jang-mi and their crazy, messed-up families very much. The rate of adoption of marriage equality legislation over time gives us some perspective on just how quickly things have changed. In the year 2000 same-sex marriage was not legal in any country – 20 years later it was legal in 32 countries.

As he drives Ki-tae tries to lighten the atmosphere, but he’s thwarted by Jang-mi’s bad mood at every turn. Finally he pulls over at a rest stop (also against her wishes) and orders lunch, saying he needs energy to endure her while she takes her upset out on him. He finally gets Jang-mi to eat by saying they can leave as soon as the food is gone.
